Lake Taupo is the heart of the North Island. Located just 3 hours south of Auckland, a two hour drive from Hamilton and short drive from Rotorua, Taupo is a bustling town that you must see on your NZ journey.

The most amazing sight in Taupo is, of course, the lake! Surrounded by Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngauruhoe, Lake Taupo was formed approximately 27,000 years ago from a huge volcanic explosion. It’s a staggering 159 metres deep and is the largest freshwater lake in the southern hemisphere – it’s roughly the size of Singapore

There’s plenty to see and do here. One of the most popular attractions to the region is the Tongariro Crossing. At 19.4km long, this epic track is one of NZ’s most famous day walks and a right of passage for many.

But that’s not all! There’s trout fishing, geothermal springs, sailing, shopping and a hub for adventure activities (just like skydiving!). Taupo really has it all.
